1790- the US Coast Guard was established, serving as the only US force on the seas at the time

1821- the Saturday Evening Post published it's first edition. Printed on s press previously operated by Ben Franklin, it was stylized after The Pennsylvania Gazette, also printed by Franklin 

1870- the Red Criss forms in Britain as the British National Society for Aid to the Sick and Wounded in War

1919- Musée Rodin opened in Paris displaying the works of French sculptor Auguste Rodin

1944- 2 years after she went into hiding from the Nazis, Anne Frank and her family were arrested

1956- German Wilhelm Herz broke a motorcycle land speed record when he achieved 210 mph at Bonneville Slat Flats, UT

1984- Carl Lewis won his first gold medal at the Los Angeles Olympics. He ran the 100-meter sprint in 9.99 seconds

1984- "Purple Rain" hit #1 on the music charts
