I'm a little late but today's (August 6) history includes:
1861- Congress passed the Confiscation Act allowing Union seizure of Confederate property and essentially freed slaves who fought for the Confederacy
1890- pitcher Cy Young made his MLB debut with the Cleveland Spiders. They won 8-1 over the Chicago Colts
1909- Alice Ramsey drove a 1909 Maxwell DA across the US. Along with her companions Nettie Powell and Margaret Atwood, they were the first women to complete a transcontinental road trip by automobile
1926- Don Juan starring John Barrymore debut in NYC. It was the first feature-length film to include a synchronized score and sound effects using Vitaphone sound-on-disc, although it contained no dialog
1936- Japanese athletes Naoto Tajima ans Masai Harada took gold and silver in the triple jump at the Berlin Olympics
1945- the US dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan. It contained approximately 141 pounds of uranium
1960- Chubby Checker performed "The Twist" on American Bandstand for the first time
1965- President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act guaranteeing the right to vote for African Americans. It was weakly enforced but provided a legal foothold for Black voters across the country
1966- Muhammad Ali maintained his undisputed heavyweight championship title by knocking out English boxer Brian London in the third round at Earl's Court in London
1972- Hank Aaron broke the record for home runs with a single team when he hit his 660th and 661st home runs. Baby Ruth previously held the record for 38 years
1973- Roberto Clemente was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. He was the first Latin American and Caribbean player to join the Hall of Fame
