Japanese proverb

Deru kui wa utareru

Translation: "the stake that sticks up gets hammered down" 

 

This means that people who stand out may be criticized. 

Seems like that is seen as a bad thing and sometimes it is necessary to stand out. Not my favorite Japanese proverb.
