The “-teen” suffix comes from the Old English word “tēona,” which means “ten.” This is why numbers like thirteen (13) literally mean “three and ten.” The numbers 11 and 12 are derived from “one left over” (eleven) and “two left over” (twelve), which follow a different pattern. This is why they don’t follow the “-teen” pattern.
