1891 - Henry C. Daltob saved a stabbing victim brought into City Hospital in St. Louis, MO. The Professor of Surgery at Marion Sims College of Medicine used a surgical suture on the pericardium, saving the mans life. This procedure is considered by many to be one of the very first heart surgeries
1892 - John Froelich invented the first gasoline-powered tractor and created the Waterloo Gasoline Traction Engine Co. On this day he sold his first tractor
1899 - the first cases of evaporated milk was produced in a facility in Kent, WA. It was called Carnation Sterilized Cream and was produced by the Pacific Coast Condensed Milk Co later known as the Carnation Milk Co
1901 - President William McKinley created his constituents one last time at Buffalo's Pan-American Exposition. Despite added security and Secret Service agents, Leon Czolgosz approached the President in the Temple of Music and fired 2 shots into his abdomen. McKinley died later that day and became the 3rd assassinated US President
1916 - Clarence Saunders opened his first Piggly Wiggly, the first self-service grocery store in Memphis, TN. Before this, grocery shopping was like going to the pharmacy where patrons took a list to the store and the grocer filled the order
1920 - the first-ever broadcast of a prizefight over the radio took place. Radio Station WWJ broadcast the event between Jack Dempsey and Billy Miske. It lasted 3 rounds when Miske dropped Dempsey with a KO

2009 - the world's largest paddling of ducks raced down the River Thames during the Great British Duck Race. The world record event raised money for several charities
