It does work. How well Depends on where you live. I'm in US and I need 3000 coins for a $5 reward. I earn about four a month.

Do you mean how long does it take to earn enough for rewards?  Or how long does it take to receive the reward? 

If receive the reward, it's usually instant.  However, some have taken longer.  I've now seen some waiting 2 weeks.  I had one out of my 30 rewards take 7 days to process.  Rest of them were instant

Definitely work. I usually average 2-3 cards per month. My gift card cost me 5000. You will have to get your 10k in every day and join in all of the challenges..
