Some notable historical events that happened today include:

 

1854 -  Daniel Halladay of Connecticut invented the first commercially successful windmill in the US

 

1862 -  the Bureau of Engraving and Printing set to work on printing paper money for the first time due to the demands of the Civil War

 

1864 -  Astronomer William Huggins discovered the first chemical composition of a nebula - The Cat's Eye Nebula

 

1889 -  Tom Pettitt of Boston and George Kerr of Dublin squared off in the first International Lawn Tennis contest. It took place following the completion of the US National Lawn Tennis Associations Nationals Tournament in Newport, RI. Kerr won with a score of 6-4, 6-1 and 6-1

 

1893 -  Whitcomb L. Judson received a patent for a Clasp Locker. Several other inventors tackled a similar design and purpose eventually becoming known as the zipper.

 

1898 -  Frank Seiberling of Akron, OH established the Goodyear Tire & Rubbery Co.

 

1909 -  the world's first air race was held in Reims, France. American Glenn Curtis won

 

1933 -  C.E. Doolin trademarked the product name Fritos

 

1953 -  Speedy Gonzales made his animation debut in "Cat-Tails for Two"

 

1958 -  the Air Force Academy opened on Colorado Springs, CO, 4 years after being established as a separate branch of the US Military 

 

1964 -  Roy Orbison released the single "Oh, Pretty Woman" from the album Orbisongs. Over 25 years later, the movie Pretty Woman brought the song back into popularity 

 

1965 -  while orbiting Earth in Gemini 5, Astronaut Gordon Cooper made a telephone call to aquanaut Scott Carpenter who was submerged in Sealab II. Long distance charges may apply

 

1968 -  The Gypsy Moths starring Burt Lancaster, Deborah Kerr and Gene Hackman began showing in the US

 

1985 -  theaters began showing  Desperately Seeking Susan starring Madonna, Rosanna Arquette and Aidan Quinn

 

1995 -  Janet Jackson released the single "Runaway"

 

1997 -  Netflix launched

 

2002 -  the biographical film Frida starring Salma Hayek, Alfred Molina and Mia Maestro began showing in theaters

 

2019 -  Sanhua Aweco created the longest line of chopsticks in Tychy, Poland. Oddly, it was done on National Chop Suey day (weird huh?)

James Brady (1940) - White House Press Secretary under President Ronald Reagan, was shot during an assassination attempt on the President
