Some notable historical events that happened today include:

1752 -  September 3rd - 12th didn't exist for Britain. Many countries had begun adopting the Gregorian calendar but those still on the Julian calendar were findings their calendars to be out of alignment with the solar cycle. On September 2nd, 1752 Britain and the American Colonies adopted the Gregorian calendar and skipped ahead to September 13th

1838 -  Frederick Douglas escaped from slavery. He fled Baltimore to freedom in Philadelphia 

1895 -  John Brallier accepted $10 and expenses from David Berry of the Larrobe YMCA to play football. He was the first to openly go professional 

1906 -  over 16,000 fans witnessed the Philadelphia Giants win the International League Championship and the Freihofer Cup

1935 -  Andrew Varipapa set the world record bowling, knocking down 2562 pins across 10 games. His best score was 299

1956 -  jockey Johnny Longden became the winningest rider in thoroughbred racing riding Spring Violet

1960 -  Wlber Hardee opened the first Hardee's restaurant in Greenville, NC selling burgers, fries and milkshakes 

1964 -  President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Wilderness Act into law. The law paved the way for the conservation and preservation of Wilderness areas across the country through the National Wilderness Preservation System

1967 -  Sweden switched to driving on the right side of the road even though 90% of the drivers owned left driver-side cars. The change required the reconfiguratuon of turning lanes, signs and more

1976 -  Viking II landed on the Mars surface 6 weeks after it's counterpart space orbiter Viking I made it's landing

1989 -  Chris Evert won her 101st and last open singles victory by beating 15 year old Monica Seles

2010 -  Coca-Cola organized the world's largest online bingo game with 483,824 players 

2013 -  Microsoft purchased the telecommunications company Nokia

Some interesting birthdays include:

Prudence Crandall (1803) - in 1833, the Quaker abolitionist opened one of the first schools for Black girls located in Connecticut. The legislature that same year passed a Black Law making it illegal for Crandall to run a school for Black students. She was arrested and convicted of breaking the law, however a higher court overturned the decision. She was forced to close the school in 1934

George Hearst (1820) - US Senator from California, also the father of William Randolph Hearst

Ferdinand Porsche (1875) - developed the first Volkswagen Beetle designs and founded the Pirsche company

Harold DeForest Arnold (1883) - responsible for making live radio Broadcasting possible

Charles Hamilton Houston (1895)

Carl David Anderson (1905) - discovered the position earning him the 1936 Nobel Prize in Physics
