21.5 - The only thing you can do is NOT feed them in the middle of the night. I'm not sure what animal we are talking about, but cats, for instance, are very routine driven. So once you break that nighttime feeding schedule, it is their routine. Again, with cats (and I assume dogs) you don't want to leave food out for them to "free feed" as that leads to overweight pets.
