1789 -  English Astronomer William Herschel discovered a new moon orbiting Saturn. It's now known as Enceladus

 

1798 -  John James Dufour planted the first commercial vineyard in Jessamine County, Kentucky 

 

1837 -  pharmacists John Lea and William Perrins created Worcester Sauce. I personally love it, we use it to flavor our refried beans for taco night and it always makes steak taste better

 

1845 -  Rufus Porter published the first issue of Scientific American. It's the oldest continuously published periodical in the US

 

1884 -  one of the first photos of a tornado was taken near Howard, SD

 

1898 -  Pharmacist Caleb Bradham changed the name of his carbonated soda from Brad's Drink to Pepsi-Cola

 

1907 -  Harry Houdini performed his escape from a nailed crate submerged in water at Aquatic Park near Fishermans Warf in San Francisco. His arms and legs were chained with handcuffs and leg irons

 

1907 -  James E. Casey established the American Messenger Co. The name was later changed to United Parcel Service (UPS)

 

1963 -  Martin Luther King Jr made his "I Have A Dream" speech during the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. It's one of the most quoted and famous speeches in the world

 

1965 -  Dr. Peter Buck and college student Fred Deluca opened the first Subway sandwich shop in Bridgeport, CT

 

1970 -  the Jackson 5 released the single "I'll be There" (featuring a young Michael Jackson)

 

1992 -  the movies Honeymoon in Vegas, Clear Cut, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me and Pet Sematary Two were released

 

2009 -  Damian Landscape & Garden completed the longest wooden walkway in the world

 

2015 -  Willamette University hosted the largest game of Red Light/Green Light. 1,203 participants broke the university's previous record from 2013

 

2017 -  Returning the Favor hosted by Mike Rowe premiered 

 

Some interesting birthdays include:

 

Elizabeth Ann Bayley Seton (1774) - established the first free Catholic school in the US. She wad canonized by the Catholic Church in 1975. Seton Hall University is named in her honor

Lucy Ware Webb Hayes (1831) - 20th First Lady of the US, she was quite loved by the country

Louis Le Prince (1841) - inventor and innovator recorded what most in the industry believe to be the first moving images on film in 1888

George Whipple (1878) - his research into treatments for pernicious anemia and the liver led to a Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine

Roger Tory Peterson (1908) - published  Peterson's Field Guide to the Birds

Tasha Tudor (1915) - author and illustrator of The Christmas Cat and A Time to Keep
