I have used interval training to lose a lot of weight and maintain muscle mass during the process. Verywell Fit says, "Interval training combines short, high-intensity bursts of speed, with slow, recovery phases, repeated during one exercise session."
For arm exercises, I use interval training when I do water aerobics. To keep it fun, and really mix up the speed of my movements, I pace myself to the beat of whatever song plays from my playlist. Since I curate the playlists, i know the songs will generally have a fast tempo. But I am sure to throw in a handful of slower songs so I get the benefits of interval training.
