I was driving around, listening to music the other day and was reminded of some super popular songs that have such dark meanings.
Electric Avenue by Eddy Grant. Everybody used to love to listen to and sing this song. Who wouldn't want to "rock down to Electric Avenue"? It sounds amazing, right? It's referencing a riot that took place in London in the early 80s. Oops, not so much fun now.
One Way or Another by Blondie.
I love Blondie and this was one of their biggest hits. Debbie Harry's intensity just knocks this out of the ballpark. Now, imagine the words being sung (or spoken) by a man to a woman. "One way of another, I'm gonna getcha." "I' will drive past your house and if the lights are all down, I'll see who's around". The song is from the perspective of an ex-boyfriend of Harry's who stalked her after the broke up. It got so bad that she left New Jersey to get away from him.
