Can you actually get that many coins without the potential of losing them? I guess over the course of a year but I thought I saw something about things turning over after so many days.

Are you asking about 100k? That is a lot. Depending on your phone. Android max per day is 200 coins and IPhone is 100. Even if you do all the challenges/reviews/mingle it will take 6-7 months to get that many coins.

Get your max coins each day for walking (some countries credit for 10,000 steps, the U.S. credits for 20,000 steps) then make sure to claim them before midnight each day.
