16.78 There are pros and cons to keto just like with any diet. One of the biggest pros to keto is more energy. The biggest con to keto is the restrictive diet. Sometimes there just aren't substitutions to be made for something you are really craving and shouldn't have. That being said, maybe it is only my experience because of food FOMO and my lack of access to diverse foods, living in such a tiny area. Even my little area has a lot of options. I swear, every time I go into Walmart they have a new item that is specifically for the keto diet.

Keto diets lower calorie consumption and therefore cause weight loss, at least in the short term. A long-term ketogenic diet can have negative health effects.

For people who are looking to gain strength and endurance, ketogenic diets result in less lean mass gain and smaller strength improvements.

Many of these risks can be mitigated by taking breaks from the keto diet.

Ketogenic diets are also very restrictive and difficult to stick to, with 50% of dieters unable to stay on it long term. Without learning about long term diet strategies on how to moderate problem foods, weight regain is very high. And as with other restrictive diets, the ketogenic diet has an increased chance of leading to disordered eating and binge cycles.

The pros: fast and practically guaranteed significant weight loss if you do it correctly. Possible to lose a large amount of weight in a short amount of time if done with discipline without harming your body in the process. If you are a meat lover and are satiated off of things like steak and eggs, this is the diet for you. Cons: there is some controversy in the medical research literature about the effects of a keto diet when done long-term on dieters arteries and hearts. Since Keto is higher in saturated fat than most other diet plans, this could potentially have an adverse effect if done over the long term for people with pre-existing conditions of those systems. If so, it's definitely worth doing a deep dive into the published studies to decide if this eating plan is right for you or not. Other than that, the biggest obvious con is definitely feelings of deprivation. This is by no means an easy diet to stick to, and if you are beginning it for the first time, I would highly recommend compiling some recipes of things you like to cook as well as keto friendly orders from your favorite restaurants so this is not a choice you have to make on a daily basis, it's already something you've mentally approached before beginning.
