Cool! What type of music do you like?
As one way to improve myself, I would like to know and listen to music pieces. It can be an instrumental piece, vocal, or the combination of them. I would like to share what I'm exploring with others.
Cool! What type of music do you like?
I like all kinds of music. It can be classical and popular. It can also be sacred or secular. The music piece can be sacred because it was written for religious purposes to use in churches, or it can be secular to include all other music to mean not sacret. They have influenced each other in many ways. I'll explore as many as I can.
In order to appreciate music better, I first need to learn about "music," kinds or genres of music, how each kind/genre is different from others, etc. It seems that the boundary of different kinds of music is not always obvious. First of all, classical music is not any different from pop music. It can be very popular. All kinds of music, including classical music, can be in different moods such as complicated, happy, scary, sad, peaceful, simple, and thoughtful. Classical music is different from jazz; at the same time it has been inspired by jazz, and jazz by classical music.
Classical music can have many forms, such as concerto, fugue, opera, oratorio, sonata, symphony, or combination of dance movements. It can be for instruments or for the voice.
The symphony orchestra uses most instruments to play classical music. It has four groups of instruments: the string instruments, the woodwind instruments, the brass instruments, and percussion instruments. The string instruments include the violins, violas, cellos an piano; the woodwind instruments are flutes, oboes, clarinets, and bassoons; the brass instruments include trumpet, trombone, tuba and French horn; and percussion instruments are timpani and many other instruments. It is different from a rock band which includes a drummer, a guitarist, singers, and an electric bass and keyboard.
Singers are sopranos, altos, tenors or basses / baritones. Sopranos and altos are mainly for female singers, and tenors, basses / baritones are for male singers. Sopranos can be divided into 2 groups: sopranos and mezzo sopranos as altos can be divided into 2 groups: altos and contraltos.
Classical music can be divided into historical periods:Middle Ages, Renaissance, Baroque period, Classical period, Romantic period, 20th century. Since it might require some deeper study for a long time to describe the characteristics of each period. I'll reserve it for a later date if there is a chance.
I have learned very important aspects of music. It is not clear what "classical music" is. Different kinds of music influence each other. Therefore, it is not possible to state clearly where the dividing lines can be drawn between classical, folk, jazz, pop, rock and world music. So, we simply enjoy any piece of music as it comes along.
For the instrumental music, I enjoy listening to Beethoven's fifth symphony, called Fate Symphony. Only four notes develop into four movements of a large piece about 35 munites--1st movement 7:17, 2nd 9:57, 3rd 5:23, and 4th 10:53. It was composed between 1804 and 1808. I hope you can enjoy listening to it as well.
