Unintended consequences

The phase-out of leaded gasoline in the 1970s led to a search for alternative additives to improve fuel performance. One such alternative was methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE), but it was later found to contaminate groundwater. This prompted a shift towards biofuels, including ethanol and biodiesel, which are derived from renewable sources like palm oil.

Trans fats, found in partially hydrogenated oils like margarine, were widely used in processed foods due to their stability and long shelf life. However, due to their adverse health effects, such as increasing the risk of heart disease, the FDA banned their use. As a result, food manufacturers sought alternatives, and palm oil became a popular choice because it is naturally solid at room temperature and free of trans fats.

Finally, palm oil derivatives have exploded in use in cosmetics and home products. Some compounds that derive from palm oil include:  glycerol used in lotions and creams; fatty acids used in soaps and shampoos; fatty alcohols used in conditioners and creams; vitamin A palmitate often added to dairy and plant-based milks; stearic acid used in candles, plastics, and cosmetics; sodium lauryl sulfate found in toothpaste, shampoos, and detergents, glyceryl stearate used in lotions and creams, cetyl alcohol used in conditioners and creams for its emollient properties.

As a result of all of these changes, the demand for palm oil has increased significantly in recent decades.

Palm oil production today faces several significant downsides. One of the primary issues is deforestation, particularly in countries like Indonesia and Malaysia, where vast areas of tropical rainforest are cleared to make way for palm oil plantations. This leads to the loss of biodiversity, endangering species such as orangutans and tigers. Additionally, the clearing of carbon-rich peatlands for palm oil cultivation releases large amounts of greenhouse gases, contributing to climate change. Social issues are also prevalent, including conflicts over land rights, poor working conditions, and exploitation of labor. Despite efforts to promote sustainable practices, these challenges remain significant obstacles in the palm oil industry.
