The series starts when the English ship and its sailors landed Japanese fishing village in 1600. The protagonist, John Blackthorne representing William Adams in history, as an English navigator could not communicate with local residents due to the language and cultural differences. In addition, the local residents called him a barbarian although he kept reminding them that he was a merchant.

The protagonist had difficulty conveying his thoughts and situations to the local residents. Here, this Viewer compared it to his own situation. He also had difficulty communicating with his own parents growing up in two different cultural environments.

As Blackthorne was mistakenly introduced as a pirate due to the incorrect translations of local priest, at some point, the Viewer had his older sibling who understood both languages to help him communicate with his parents. Most of the time, the interpretation was incorrect. So, the communication failed.

In the show, the protagonist expressed very clearly that all he wanted was to leave and return to his home country. But his wish was never granted. The Viewer also had the same feeling that he wanted to leave his own situation, the home and school, and neighborhood environments, because whatever he was facing at the time was not in his favor. But his wish never came true.

The protagonist was a bit better, gaining some respect after helping the villagers who faced an extra ordinary situation that they could not get away from, such as saving lives from earthquake. The Viewer thought that he can also be in a better living condition, if he does something good in his life.

Day by day, the protagonist adjusted to the unknown society and the foreign culture. The Viewer also had to adjust and accept his own environment. However, it has never been easy.

In the end, although the examples are only a superficial aspect, and it is hard to generalize from them; a novel, a TV program, and even entire media can affect people’s lives. It can display better our inner feelings otherwise hidden for good. It can also demonstrate things that are unknown. As a result, people may identify themselves from it. How about you?
