Have you considered getting a Lenovo laptop? My son got a really nice ultra book with an extended warranty for far less than a MacBook and it is still going strong 6 yrs on into his master program

Considering your budget and preferences, the 15" MacBook Air with 16GB RAM seems like a great option. The larger screen size will be beneficial for studying and multitasking, and the price difference of $200 is reasonable. Keep in mind that the MacBook Air's passive cooling system might lead to slightly warmer temperatures during extended use, but it shouldn't be a major concern for basic tasks.
